The Mind and What is.

Me - They say its all in the mind. So its up to the mind to define what is. If life was meant to be anything other than just this, the mind would've attempted to make that .......what is.
Arun - Mind is NEVER at what is, it is ALWAYS in what was or what ought to be. Its only in a NO MIND state that you see what IS.
Me - That sounds like the Theory of Relativity. Probable but not achievable because one can't create conditions to experience the inherent postulate.
Arun - If you put your mind to it, you will know it. Just think over it.
Me - How does one put ones mind to it? As per your postulates, thinking/thought is about what was or what could be, so baggage is inherent to thought. NO MIND would require a new sensory vocab!
Arun - Actually you don't put your mind to it, but just mind your mind and see where it is most of the time. Should be a very interesting exercise!

Arun - All our endeavors in life are either in pursuit or prolongation of some pleasure or, an attempt to escape from pain.
True/False
Me - Is apathy a sitting on the fence posture in that scenario? Those choices presume endeavor stems from a capacity for feeling. Thats generic but not universal. Some don't care.
I think syntax inhibits understanding of the process. Is one observing thought as representing the mind. Most times there's no thought, just vacant gazing with object recognition if willed, which is usually a reaction to stimulus. One ends up wondering about the origin of thought and the "blankness of mind". Its like observing idleness. What does one look for?

Perception

Arun - In my absence as "me"--"you" are present as "I".
Me - The reality usually is that it's the omniscient presence of "You" that dictates whether it "me" or "I" in the absentia role. To be or not to be is basically a comfort choice.
Arun - As long as you perceive "you", "me" and "I" are there to stay.
Me - Can one graduate to a sense of being beyond and independent of perception cues, while living in a world where all thought and action tends to be evaluated and understood in relative hues?

Karma?

Me - It's because we did what we did that we now do what we do.
Arun - Karma?
Me - Karma is that placebo for all that one doesn't comprehend. We make informed choices based on our motivation, knowledge and abilities. Continually coping with the dynamic of life that results from the cause and effect of our choices.
Those who choose to do what they do, knowing why, tend to be fulfilled. Karmyogis. For those who just do or do because they have to - Karma.

Party times

The mind can be a watchdog guarding against temptation OR, a guardian checking over-indulgence. Attitudes that define the quality of sensory experience.
Choose 'sense' and sensibility.

Not the purpose of life but the quality of it!!!

Arun - No, I'm not bothered about purpose of life. I'm concerned about the quality of it. Why do we live as we Do?

Me - Clarity about your purpose in life dictates the choices you make which in turn define how and why you do what you do, which then is manifested in the quality of life.
For most, purpose is just fulfilling the activity obligations of the job, family and societal standing. For them the choices have clear boundaries and a tangible input output productivity index. Since seeking is tangible, so is suffering. Self actualisation is but materialistic arrival. And why they do what they do is the means to their ends.
The problem comes when one has a more altruistic purpose. 'Coz that needs to dovetail with the activity cycle which is a constant, if you wanna conform. Not being able to nags, frustrates and life sucks. Society's hypocrisies, the futility of seeking, the absent present et al are just panaceas for ones inability to come to terms with what one wants/seeks. That altruistic purpose.

In the same vein as the question: Do we eat to live or live to eat?....
Do we do do what we do because we have to or want to?

16.2.10
Now is always buffeted by the possibilities revealed in hindsight. What if scenarios that make one wonder if one sub-optimised choice for expediency or, just not knowing better. Such reflection is usually brought on either by a sense of failure or, trying to figure out why what is doesn't seem to make much sense. One tides over the former because hindsight usually just confirms that one didn't know any better. No anchors of purpose, knowledge or desire. What is was meant to be.
Its when expedient choices were seemingly purposefully made that the mind in the present, harks back and forth to the what if scenarios. A sense of loss of what isn't haunting the seeming senselessness of what is.
Expedient choice was the pragmatic option. Pragmatism, like politics, is the art of the achieveable. Both compromise purpose easily. Both aren't comfort zones for thinking people. Hence Suffering.

Its polite to end conversations you start even if its only to say you're not interested in the load of bull you're getting.
Clarifies the other party's perspectives on life.

Arun - Actually its difficult to understand your English. Takes me quite some time.

Me - Ha Ha!! And that from a guy who devours philosophers with ease. I'll keep that in mind though.

Purpose of life?

Arun - Why are we all suffering? What are we all seeking? Why are we seeking? Is what we are seeking a reality or is it our imagined end point? Is there an end point? If it is, then the end point of what? Our existence? Our suffering? Why do we seek the end point when we are not even familiar with the beginning or with what is? Is the desire of what should be, rather than experiencing what is, the cause of our suffering? Why is man not able to enjoy the present moment fully? Is it because we are always living either in the past or the future? Why do we always live in regret or hope? Why doesn't the present appeal to us? Is it because our mind is always looking for a different experience each moment? Why doesn't our mind savour each moment as it is, rather than always trying to change it? Why is everyone pulling the other guy down? Is this kind of competition healthy? What kind of a society have we created? The Monster, the so called society, is our own creation, where we preach exactly opposite of what we do. Is it possible to love thy neighbour in a society whose very foundation is hatred, based on various beliefs, religions and cults? Every religion is trying to eliminate the other, claiming their God to be the real God, their truth to be the only truth. Is truth variable? Or is it a fact? Is truth static or dynamic? Does it have an address. There are so many paths to it?

Me - You seem to be back to that question: What is the purpose of one's life?
We come to realise that something is expected of us thanks to the tribe and the norm of finding a niche in society.Purpose starts emerging with awareness of possibilities, an offshoot of the knowledge and skills one acquires. Knowledge is invariably the cornerstone of dissonance in as much as perpetually throwing up options of what can be, or could be or should be. And so one seeks. Mostly what is sought is tangible. To fulfl a temporal desire. Or just for learning.
We are just prisoners of our minds. We keep extending its domain through knowledge and it's increased awareness multiplies the possibilities of temporal achievement that keep one befuddled about ones purpose in life. If one has the capacity to create something original, one is likely to feel satiated. Else one is only validating someone elses experience, be it the tenets of religion or philosophy or equalling and bettering others tangible achievements.
The key to equanimity is the acceptance of the reach of ones capabilities. If you are not a creator then accept that you will always follow and run with the herd. Just existence. Improving the tangible quality of ones life incrementally.
Let knowledge acquisition be guided by the need to know. No expectancies creating seeking. For suffering is but dashed expectation. Know not, seek not,and thou shalt hurt not. If you actually know what it is you wish to achieve but it seems a selfish aim, then you'll keep suffering as the accepted norms of societal behavior dictate running with the herd.
Truth is relative. The absolute part of it only relates to behavioral conformity in society's lens. In the cell of your mind you are free to be who you are. Its the friction at the interfaces that causes suffering. If your purpose conflicts with your world, recalibrate your purpose or, change your world. The middle path is these questions and suffering.
Accept who you are and that what is was meant to be. You may still have regrets about the past and hopes for the future, but they will be tempered by inevitability. So whats wrong with the helplessness of being. Thats similar to the state that triggers off lines of inquiry into the purpose of life at regular intervals.
So accept what is and abstain from asking the whys!

A Valentine

Indulge?
And intensity creates the moment.
Touch.
The senses come alive.
Feel.
And the mind rationalises sensation.
Think.
And what could've been bliss is gone.
Reflect.
And one wonders why
life's pleasures do we deny?
Unable to feel without being
distracted by ones feelings.
And yet...Come Valentines
we rush to stay in touch.....
hoping to feel.

Welcome to the Roarin 20s

Today you're actually old enough to wonder,
how young you really are.
Stepping out of the teen cocoon,
Into the portals of a decade that'll define your life.

The times they are a changin.

Soon you'll be a college elder,
exploring avenues to become a young achiever.
A passage from carefree girldom,
to the independence, fun and responsibility of ladyland.

Welcome to the Roarin 20s,
where dreams are realised.

This rite of passage though,
is largely in the mind.
And you sense that maybe,
time does seem to fly.

Happy Birthday Bay2.
Life's only just begun.
